this domestic partnership thing sucks. you only get 10 out of the 1400 rights given to straight couples, but you have to go through the exact same hassle to separate – that’s right – you still have to apply for a divorce.
It’s not a matter of religion, it’s a matter of facts. Same hassles to dissolve the marriage is forced by the government on civil unions/domestic partnerships as are on marriage. This is a fact. Same rights to legal property, hospital visitation, establishing inheritance and power of attorney, filing taxes, establishing credit, establishing guardianship of children and sharing healthcare are needed in civil union/domestic partnership as are on marriage. This is a fact too. These are not religious issues but legal issues. It’s not the lgbt communities fault that marriage has a gazillion non-religious crossroads with a legal system based on the separation of church and state. Churches should feel free not to marry gay couples – that’s their right. But courthouses and the justice of the peace – american legal systems and not church systems should not have the right to deny marriage between two loving people. That is a right they dont have.
Didn’t we already establish separate is not equal? Should LGBT people have separate water fountains and ride in the back of the bus? Go to a different school? As for state’s rights – I thought that it was from “sea to shining sea” – not “sea to shining sea except alabama and mississippi”. What would our country look like if civil liberties were decidable on a state by state basis? Women could vote in one state and not another, people of color would have to stop at the state line and play musical racial chairs by all migrating to the back of the bus. It’s rediculous.
ok. done with the rant.
