AllConsuming.net should allow me to add items from Lists of Bests more easily

I’d like to be able to add books from my to-read list without going over to Lists of Bests.

Should not do this

I don’t really see any good way of doing that. It makes sense just to go to Lists of Bests. If you have a better idea, you might as well elaborate on it…

Should do this

There are several integration problems I’ve run across between All Consuming and Lists of Bests.

First, as Lists of Bests is currently structured, you cannot “be consuming” an item from the list. If you choose an item at All Consuming to “be consuming”, you end up with a duplicate entry on your consumption list when you bring it over from Lists of Bests. This problem prompted my initial suggestion.

Second, if you’re using someone else’s list, particularly if it’s long, it’s nto always easy for an end-user to figure out whether an item is on a List of Bests list. This might be solved with a text reminder (“is this on a list?”)

Third, there’s no way to go back and include current consumption in a new list. So if, for instance, you wanted to add a list of classic movies that you’d already seen part of, you have to reenter all the ones you’ve already seen and delete current entries.

I’m not sure there is a simple technical solution to any of these problems. Apart from the integration issues, they’d probably require database work that’s beyond project scope (e.g., some items have multiple entries and not just for different book/DVD editions).

Should not do this

1. Well, I don’t know about stuff from All Consuming, but for goals, Lists of Bests will mark ones you’re working on in red. It’s not really too much trouble to click the title and then say you’ve consumed it rather than clicking the checkbox…

2. Okay, so 43 Things/Places/People and All Consuming need to have a link saying “view the lists that this is on”.

3. I don’t really get what you’re saying here. Can’t you just go to your account on All Consuming if you want a list of the items you’re currently consuming?

Should do this

1. Ahhh, that’s how you do that. It’s not immediately apparent.

2. Yes, that should do it.

3. Let me throw a use case at you: let’s say you watched Casablanca last week and marked it consumed. This week, you decide you want to have a list of “Best movies of the 1940s” and Casablanca is on it.

How do you mark Casablanca watched on the list without adding it to your consumption again?

Should not do this

Surely it’ll just be marked as consumed as soon as it’s added? Once again, it works for goals, so I don’t see why it shouldn’t work for “consumables”.
