It seems to me that no other childhood illness that has over a 70% chance of death as a prognosis is ever poked fun at by the entertainment industry. And yet, year after year, I continue to hear comments that are supposed to be funny being directed at this particular group of illnesses. I get it. The idea of a bubble is funny. Guess what? Most of these children get monthly infusions instead of living in bubbles. Is it a cure? No. The prognosis for my grandson is grim and I am being told to appreciate all the moments I have with him now. I am intellectually dealing with that but in my heart, holding out that a stem cell transplant will save him. Anyway, when did it ever become okay to make fun of an illness, especially one that is so devastating to childhood?
